Pittsburgh Maulers Unveil New Black and Gold Jerseys

The Pittsburgh Maulers have unveiled their full uniforms for the 2023 season, the club’s first wearing Pittsburgh’s familiar black and gold color scheme.

The uniforms will be similar to the ones the team wore in 2022, when it was using its historic purple and orange color scheme. The white jerseys will be paired with have black shoulder yokes, black numbers and gold trim. The black jerseys have gold shoulders and white numbers with gold trim.

It appears that both sets of uniforms will be paired with white pants that have a black stripe down the side, black socks and black shoes.

The Maulers’ previously released helmets obviously owe a lot to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the jersey designs appear to be a departure, with a unique number font and combination of colors that has not been worn much in Pittsburgh. The Steelers have worn almost exclusively gold pants for the last 50 years or so and have not had a uniform with contrasting shoulders since the 1960s.

The Maulers started training camp this week in Canton, Ohio in preparation for the team’s second consecutive season in the reborn USFL. The team’s 10-game schedule will be played out of Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, a facility that the Maulers will share with the New Jersey Generals.

Former Steelers defensive backs coach Ray Horton has taken the reins as Maulers head coach for 2023, and James Morgan, who was briefly with the Steelers as well as the New York Jets, Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals, is expected to be the team’s starting quarterback.

Reuben Foster, a former first-round draft pick, is expected to anchor the defense as an inside linebacker. Pittsburgh native and Central Catholic alum Tre Tarpley is back for a second season at safety.

The 2023 USFL season opens April 16.
