Former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Alan Haller is expected to be the next athletic director at his alma mater, Michigan State, according to a report by the Detroit Free Press.

Haller has been the second in command of the MSU athletic department under Bill Beekman, who resigned on Aug. 4. Though the decision has been made, Haller’s hiring must be approved of by the university’s board of trustees.

Haller, 51, is a Lansing, Michigan native that played for George Perles at Michigan State. The Steelers drafted him in the fifth round of the 1992 NFL Draft. He made the team as a rookie, playing mostly on special teams, but was waived on Nov. 17, 1992. The Cleveland Browns grabbed Haller on waivers, but after three games there, he suffered a season-ending injury.

Haller returned to Pittsburgh for 1993 and played four games with the club before again being released. He finished his NFL career with two games with Carolina in 1995.

After his playing career, Haller became a police officer at MSU and spent 13 years on the force, earning the rank of First Lieutenant. He started in the athletics department in 2010, when he was hired as associate athletics directory for administration.
