Steelers GM Candidate John Spytek

The Pittsburgh Steelers completed their second interview with Tampa Bay Buccaneers vice president Jon Spytek Thursday, the team announced on Twitter.

Spytek is currently in his sixth season with the Buccaneers, moving up from director to vice president of player personnel in 2021. With Tampa, Spytek has overseen the college and pro scouting departments

Before his time with the Buccaneers, Spytek worked for the Denver Broncos, Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions in scouting and operations. Spytek’s career in the NFL spans 18 seasons.

The Steelers are looking at candidates who have a scouting background for their general manager vacancy. Longtime general manager Kevin Colbert stepped down from the role following the 2022 NFL Draft.

The first round of interviews for the position, completed before the 2022 NFL Draft, involved a total of 16 individuals.

The second round of interviews that are finished include internal candidates in Omar Khan and Brandon Hunt, external candidates in former Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley, Philadelphia Eagles vice president Andy Weidl and Tennessee Titans vice president Ryan Cowden.

Despite stepping down, Colbert is helping in the hiring process for the new general manager position, along with head coach Mike Tomlin and president Art Rooney II. The Steelers did not announce a timeframe for making a new hire. The likely timeframe for the end of the second round of interviews is the end of OTAs on May 24.
