INDIANAPOLIS — Pittsburgh Steelers running back Cordarrelle Patterson sustained an ankle injury late in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts and will not return.

The injuries are piling up for the Steelers, as Patterson is the third player to leave the game with an injury, joining guard James Daniels (ankle) and outside linebacker Nick Herbig (ankle). All three suffered ankle injures.

Patterson’s injury occurred on a 10-yard run to set the Steelers’ up at the Colts’ 25-yard line. George Pickens fumbled on the next play and Colts safety Julian Blackmon recovered the loose ball, however. Patterson had runs of 12, 11, 9 and 10 to get the Steelers deep in Colts’ territory. He also had a 14-yard reception. It was Pittsburgh’s best drive of the game after a dreadful start. The Colts lead 17-3 at halftime.

The Steelers came into Sunday’s game short at running back with Jaylen Warren out due to a knee injury. Aaron Shampklin was elevated for Sunday’s game to replace Warren, who was pulled from last Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

A 24-year-old Harvard alum, Shampklin is making his NFL debut. With Patterson sidelined, he’ll now serve as the No. 2 running back behind Najee Harris. The Paramount, California native first signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and has spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Gamblers of the USFL before catching on with the Steelers in January.

In three preseason games for the Steelers this season, Shampklin ran 13 times for 40 yards and caught three passes for three yards. After being released in the final round of cuts in late August, Shampklin did not make the team’s initial practice squad, but he was re-signed to the practice squad on Sept. 4 after Boston Scott suffered an injury.

The Steelers chose to elevate Shampklin over veteran running back Jonathan Ward, who is also on the practice squad.
