Dan Campbell: Lions Starters to Play vs. Steelers, Jared Goff to Sit

The Detroit Lions will play their starters against the Steelers, but will not play starting quarterback Jared Goff, head coach Dan Campbell announced on Monday.

Goff was able to wiggle his way into some preseason snaps, going 3 of 4 for 47 yards thus far on the preseason. However, Campbell is not going to leave it up to chance anymore as the veteran quarterback will sit out the game. As for the rest of the starters, that will allow the Steelers to get some tests against them as a whole.

Detroit carries a talented tight end in T.J. Hockenson that will test the Steelers. That also means the Steelers’ offensive line will get tested by Aidan Hutchinson and others on the Detroit Lions young, budding defensive front. The offensive line has vowed to improve from the performance against Jacksonville, as they see it as subpar.

The Steelers will be playing their starters for potentially a half, and that is what the Lions are prepared to do as well. While Mike Tomlin has not formally said the Steelers will play their starters for that long, it will likely be on a scale. Some players, such as T.J. Watt, are unlikely to play much at all.

Meanwhile, there are other players such as Najee Harris who could see their first snaps of the preseason. Either way, the scale for the game will be interesting to watch with the quarterback competition still ongoing. It will all adjust just how much Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett will suit up for Pittsburgh as well.

Regardless, both teams are seemingly using it as a tune-up game to get ready for their week one matchups. The teams will meet on Sunday at 4:30 P.M., at Acrisure Stadium. It will be the third and final preseason game for both teams before their week one matchups.
