Film Room: Steelers Uneven Defensive Performance vs. Cowboys

While the offense has generated more of the storylines in recent days, the Pittsburg Steelers defense has been shaky the last two times that we’ve seen them take the field. It wasn’t all bad as they held the Cowboys offense to 17 points and generated three turnovers which is usually a recipe for a win. But for the second straight week, the opposing team has had no trouble moving the football particularly through the air. During that time frame, they’ve given up 17 of 29 possible third down conversions. It’s not time to panic about this unit given the talent on that side of the ball but it’s worth taking a deep dive into some of the issues on film.

SN analyst Derrick Bell breaks down the good, bad and the mixed bag from their performance in primetime. This video highlights some of the positive individual performances, details behind the collective struggles and a couple concerning trends that opposing offenses are looking to take advantage of. Injuries have struck in key positions which only makes fixing some of these issues even more difficult. But they’ll have a good matchup this upcoming weekend against a Raiders team that comes into the contest ranking 23rd in points per game.
