First and 10: Terrell Edmunds Provides Value and Stability for Steelers Defense

Steelers SS Terrell Edmunds

Terrell Edmunds is back in the fold.

The Steelers re-signed the former first-round safety to a one-year $2.5 million deal Friday after testing the waters in free agency.

Edmunds has spent his first four seasons in Pittsburgh after being selected No. 28 overall in the 2018 draft. The Steelers did not pick up his $6.75 million fifth-year option for the 2022 season, opting for a bargain in comparison at $4.25 million less.

No, it’s not the flashy signing of Tyrann Matthieu that was rumored for weeks. No, it probably won’t change much of anything regarding how the organization will approach the draft other than the flexibility of additional cap space.

Edmunds improved in 2021 and had arguably a career season with two interceptions, eight tackles-for-loss.

Bringing Edmunds back into the fold should not be surprising to anyone, maybe so that it took this long to get back together.

Out of cap purgatory and still capable of adding pieces to a team lacking depth at receiver and other positions is another benefit of retaining Edmunds at an affordable rate. It also probably eliminates the chance of taking a safety like Notre Dame’s Kyle Hamilton in the first round

His tackling took a step forward last season and costs pennies on the dollar compared to the projected contract extension for Minkah Fitzpatrick.

2022 is lining up to be another ‘prove it’ type season for Edmunds to solidify himself as an integral part of the Steelers defense or force the Steelers into finding his potential replacement one year from now.
