Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier said that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo should become the next Steelers quarterback, Friday afternoon.

“I think somebody like Jimmy Garoppolo could really help,” Shazier said on 93.7 The Fan. “Personally, I don’t think we should draft a quarterback this year.”

The Steelers have many options for quarterback next season after Ben Roethlisberger retired after 18 seasons with the team last month.

Garoppolo will be a free agent this offseason after leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship game. It is likely that he is going to leave the team, with young Trey Lance the heir apparent at quarterback for San Francisco.

Quarterbacks the Steelers could likely have as their starter next season are established quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers, Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks and Derek Carr of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Current Steelers quarterbacks like backup Mason Rudolph and third-stringer Dwayne Haskins also have a shot next season to become the team’s starter.

The NFL Draft this April is also a place where the Steelers have been looking for their new starting quarterback. Liberty’s Malik Willis and Pitt’s Kenny Pickett are the favorites for the team, especially after their performances at last week’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, A.L.
