Insider Reveals Steelers QB Plan After Passing on Shedeur Sanders
Insider Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda shares the Pittsburgh Steelers plan at quarterback after passing on Shedeur Sanders.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft with their quarterback situation still unresolved. They had the chance to take Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders in the first round on Thursday night, but opted to address their aging defensive line instead with Oregon’s Derrick Harmon.
Insider Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda reveals the Steelers still plan to address their quarterback room, which is currently occupied by just Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson, before the end of the draft, though.
“Now that they passed on Sanders, when will the Pittsburgh Steelers take a quarterback? The team doesn’t own a selection in the second round and has just one pick on Friday, the 83rd choice,” Pauline writes. “They like Kyle McCord of Syracuse and will have to decide when to take him, whether in the third round or roll the dice and hope he’s available with their next pick, No. 123 in Round 4.”
Pittsburgh has shown interest in McCord, hosting him for a pre-draft visit earlier this month. So he could turn out to be one of the team’s next selections.
The No. 83 overall pick in the third round may be a bit steep as he currently ranks as the eighth-best quarterback and No. 132 overall player on the NFL Mock Draft Database consensus big board. But pick No. 123 in the fourth round is certainly in play.
The 22-year-old threw for a nation-high 4,779 yards along with 34 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while leading the Orange to a 10-3 record in 2024. He also broke multiple single-season all-time program records.
In the final regular season game against 6th-ranked Miami, McCord threw for 380 yards and became the program’s first 4,000-yard passer. He also set an ACC single-season record with his 4,779 yards passing.
The Steelers remain confident they’ll eventually land free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers as well. However, general manager Omar Khan said they are going to add at least two more players to the room before training camp. They may just turn out to be Rodgers and McCord.
