Just-Released Steelers Offensive Tackle Clears Waivers
Just-released Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Dylan Cook has cleared waivers after being released on Thursday. He’s now free to sign with any team or he can join the Steelers practice squad.
Cook, 25, had spent the entire regular season on the team’s injured reserve list while rehabbing a preseason Lisfranc injury. He was surprisingly released one day after he was elevated from IR, but he might land back with the club now since he cleared waivers.
Cook, 26, is a 6-foot-6, 305-pound tackle from Butte, Montana in his second season with the Steelers and third in the NFL. He joined Pittsburgh last May after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after his rookie season. Cook spent the entire 2023 season on the Steelers active roster as the No. 4 tackle, and was dressed for one game, but did not make an appearance. This season, he once again appeared set to enter the season as the fourth tackle behind Dan Moore Jr., Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu.
Fautanu was lost for the season to a knee injury before the third game, meaning the free agent signing Calvin Anderson has been serving as the backup tackle. In addition to playing both tackle spots in training camp, Cook worked as the team’s jumbo tight end, as well.
Anderson played in one snap over the three games he’s been active for the Steelers, allowing a sack against the New York Giants on Monday night in one play replacing Dan Moore Jr. at left tackle.
The Steelers did not make a corresponding transaction after waiving Cook and now only have 51 players on their active roster. One of those slots will be taken by cornerback Cam Sutton, who has a roster exemption that will expire on Monday, but the club now has two other openings as they move through their bye week.
