INDIANAPOLIS — Liberty quarterback Malik Willis is among the players that have met with the Pittsburgh Steelers at the 2022 NFL Combine, Willis said Wednesday. The team has repeatedly pursued the passer through the 2022 NFL Draft process.

Willis said he wasn’t sure if he’s a good X’s and O’s fit for the Steelers, but that the feels comfortable working with the team’s coaching staff.

“I met the coaches and I can get behind that,” Willis said. “They’re good people.”

Willis said that he will not be running the 40-yard dash or other on-field drills, instead saving those for Liberty’s pro day. He will be throwing in front of scouts and participate in the measurements and medical evaluations.

“I just came to compete,” Willis said. “It is what it is. You can think what you want to. Everybody deserves their opinion. I just came to throw against these guys that’s going to be here.”

Willis is known for both his rushing and passing abilities, and by skipping the on-field tests at the combine, he’s placing an outsized importance on his pro day. Willis was projected to be one of the fastest quarterbacks in combine history. He declined to give a target time he’s training to beat, saying “we’ll see.”

He has been linked to the Steelers in multiple mock drafts, including two notable ones this week by ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. and NFL Network’s Bucky Brooks. He is largely seen as one of the top quarterbacks available in the 2022 NFL Draft class.

The Steelers also met with Willis at the Senior Bowl and general manager Kevin Colbert attending Liberty’s bowl game.
