New Extension Details Emerge for Steelers QB Mitch Trubisky

The contract details for the extension that Steelers backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky will sign have been revealed. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the extension will be a 3-year deal that is currently worth $19.4 million over those three years.

Trubisky can make up to $33 million across the entire deal, but the extension will save the Steelers money right from the outset of the contract. While it is not clear just how much his cap hit will be lowered, it could be cut in half after counting nearly $10 million against the cap.

The extension should cut Trubisky’s base salary, which was $8 million, and spread it ou over the two new years that will be added to the contract. Trubisky will be under contract through the 2025 season as a result of the new extension that will help Pittsburgh with cap flexibility.

Trubisky, 28, came to Pittsburgh as a free agent in March 2022, when he signed a two-year contract worth $14.285 that was expected to make Trubisky the team’s starting quarterback for the two seasons following the departure of Ben Roethlisberger. However, that was cut short when Kenny Pickett took over the offense in the middle of the New York Jets game, and would not relinquish the job from thereafter.

Mitch Trubisky now gets some long-term security as the backup for the team. He ended up playing in seven games and starting five. Trubisky completed 117 of 180 passes (65%) for 1,252 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions. The team slashed some more cap room off with the extension after releasing Ahkello Witherspoon yesterday. That move will save $4 million.

The Steelers have yet to sign their top three picks in the NFL Draft, and they will still need cap space to sign those players. In addition, they have one spot open on the 90-man roster should they want to make a splash signing with that last slot.
