NFL Insider John Clayton: Steven Nelson Likely Returning to Steelers

Just hours after former Steelers corner Steven Nelson tweeted a cryptic message about his NFL future, veteran NFL Insider John Clayton appeared on Pittsburgh’s 93.7 The Fan and predicted that Nelson will be calling Heinz Field home again if he does announce his decision in the next 24 hours.

Nelson tweeted “today or tomorrow stay tuned” early this afternoon, leaving fans, especially Steelers fans, curious which team will gain his services.

Many have speculated that a return to Pittsburgh is not out of the question for the veteran. The Steelers released Nelson back in April to clear salary cap space, but it’s possible a new deal could be worked out with him still on the market.

Adding Nelson to a secondary that no longer includes Mike Hilton would surely offer more flexibility in trying to put everyone in their best position for success. It would also the Steelers to not have to rely on Joe Haden so much due to his age and injury history.

Nelson recorded 48 total tackles during the 2020 season with 2 interceptions. Pittsburgh signed Nelson prior to the 2019 season after he had spent his entire NFL career with the Chiefs.
