Odds: Mike Tomlin’s Non-Losing Season Streak in Serious Jeopardy

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has a long streak of consecutive non-losing seasons, but it appears to be in jeopardy with his team starting the season with four losses in its first five games.

Though Tomlin has been through worse starts in his 15 seasons as Steelers head coach, this time, the oddsmakers are not bullish on his chances of recovering from another slow start.

According to odds posted this week by BetOnline, Tomlin is -5,000 to lose his streak and +1,200 to keep it intact through the end of the 2022 season.

Not only don’t the bookmarkers think Tomlin will get the Steelers to .500, they don’t even think he’ll get close. The current odds at Fanduel Sportsbook have the Steelers 2022 win total at over/under 4.5 victories.

If the Steelers win 4.5 more games, they would finish with a 5-11-1 record, tied for the worst since the team went 5-11 in 1988. The last time the Steelers won fewer than five games was in 1969, when the team went 1-13 in Chuck Noll’s first season.

Tomlin’s 1-4 start matches his start from 2019, when the team rebounded to finish 8-8. The 2013 Steelers started 0-4 and 2-6 before rebounding to finish 8-8.

The Steelers have even longer odds of making the playoffs. According to FanDuel, they’re +1,600 to make the postseason entering Week 6 and -3,500 to miss it.

The Steelers are expected to lose this week’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with the line shifting to make Tom Brady’s visiting squad an 8.5-point favorite just a few days before the game.
