The Philadelphia Eagles have boasted the strongest passing defense in the playoffs — permitting only 96.0 yards per game over their two contests. The Chiefs could be smart to use Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon to pound the football. Pacheco, a seventh-round pick in last spring’s NFL Draft, has been one of the surprises of the go-round. Since taking the starting job from injury-prone Clyde Edwards-Helaire in Week 7, he has morphed into the team’s primary tailback.

Tale of Two Games for Patrick Mahomes

Against Jacksonville in the divisional round with his team worrying about its generational passer, Pacheco took to the ground for 95 yards — his second-highest output of the campaign. Kansas City had 144 rushing yards in all against the Jaguars. Although Patrick Mahomes dealt with his injury, the Chiefs didn’t come close to sniffing 100 rushing yards against Cincinnati in the two teams’ conference title matchup. Pacheco paced his side with a mere 26 rushing yards and no other ball carrier wearing red passed eight. Kansas City ran the ball 20 times for an average of just 2.6 yards per tote. Accordingly, no carry went for more than six yards.

Weighing Options

The Chiefs have surpassed 100 rushing yards in 11 of their 19 outings this year — including five against playoff squads. On the other side, the Eagles have conceded at least 100 yards on the ground in six of their last seven meetings overall. Mahomes could factor in, as well. With how he willed himself to success against the Bengals, who’s to say that he won’t scamper for some real estate and push his team’s total closer to the over? That’s up for you to decide.
