Steelers DC Teryl Austin Honorary Captain for Pitt-Rhode Island
PITTSBURGH — Steelers defensive coordinator and former Pitt football player Teryl Austin will be the honorary captain for the Panthers as they face Rhode Island on Saturday.
Austin played for Pitt from 1984 to 1987, where he was a three year starter at safety for the Panthers. He would get into coaching starting in 1992 with Penn State. A Sharon, Pennsylvania, native, Austin was an in-state success story for Pitt.
With the Panthers, he started in the Fiesta and Bluebonnet bowl games. It is a rare open Saturday for Austin, so this is a special opportunity for the Steelers defensive coordinator to see his alma mater play football.
Teryl Austin has been an NFL defensive coordinator for nearly a decade with the Detroit Lions, Cincinnati Bengals, and now the Steelers. He was instrumental in the Baltimore Ravens winning their Super Bowl in 2012 as the secondary coach.
Pitt and Rhode Island will kick off at 12 p.m. where the No. 24 Panthers will introduce Austin prior to the kickoff for coin toss.
