Diontae Johnson Leaves Game With Shoulder Injury

Steelers WR Diontae Johnson

PITTSBURGH — Diontae Johnson went into the blue tent shortly after a dynamic 38-yard connection with Mitch Trubisky against the Lions. On the play, Johnson was hit by a safety coming over the top and came out slowly after the hard hit. After heading into the blue tent, Johnson went to the locker. He is out for the remainder of the game with a shoulder injury.

The Steelers vowed to play their starters for an entire half and they have done so thus far. Pittsburgh already has a somewhat banged-up receiver room with Chase Claypool and Calvin Austin III banged up. Johnson being injured is not ideal for the Steelers as they prepare for their Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Diontae Johnson was immediately called out. That could be out of an abundance of caution, but it is not an encouraging sign to see him ruled out that early. Mike Tomlin will likely address it in the post-game press conference where he will update Johnson’s status moving forward.

With Johnson now out, that will give more looks for George Pickens, Gunner Olszewski, and Miles Boykin. Along with Steven Sims, Boykin is fighting for the last roster spot at receiver. It could come down to what happens against Detroit to see who gets the nod.
