Mitch Trubisky Atop Steelers Week 1 Quarterback Depth Chart

The Steelers have listed quarterback Mitch Trubisky atop their Week 1 depth chart, thus indicating he will likely start against Cincinnati in Week 1.

It follows the trend of the Steelers playing Trubisky with the first team throughout all of training camp and the preseason. As such, it is no surprise on the day when Trubisky was named a captain by his teammates. He has earned the trust of the coaching staff after an impressive preseason and training camp to this point.

In addition, the interesting note with the quarterback room is that it is Mason Rudolph who currently is in the backup role. Then, Kenny Pickett is listed as the third-string quarterback. If that is how it plays out, Pickett will get little to no reps in the week, and he will be inactive on game day. Still, that remains to be seen if that sticks.

Regardless, Mitch Trubisky getting the starting job is no surprise. The Steelers have set it up all offseason so that as long as Trubisky did not fall off a cliff, he should get that gig. So, when he put up a more than solid preseason, it was a no-brainer for the team to name Trubisky as the starter. Moving forward, the Steelers will operate with Trubisky as the head of the Matt Canada offense.

Trubisky didn’t want to reveal his role when asked before the depth chart was released on Monday.

“You can assume anything you want,” Trubisky said. “The announcement will come out when it needs to come out. But you’re not going to hear it from me. We’re going to go about our business.”
