Pat Narduzzi: There’s No Question Kenny Pickett is Ready to Start

Steelers QB Kenny Pickett

Kenny Pickett plays next door to his old college coach Pat Narduzzi, and there is no question that the two of them have quite the connection. While Pickett is busy playing for the Steelers and Narduzzi is hard at work with Pitt, Narduzzi manages to keep tabs on Pickett always. So, with the recent struggles of Mitch Trubisky, the calls for Pickett to start have started to mount.

While Narduzzi has not been able to watch the first two weeks of the season, he knows if called upon, Pickett would be ready at the drop of a hat. After coaching him for five years, Narduzzi knows the ins and outs of Kenny Pickett, and if Trubisky were to ever get benched, he believes Pickett would be ready for when his name is called.

“I know Kenny, and I haven’t seen one play in the last two weeks, I don’t have time to watch Sunday football, unfortunately,” Narduzzi said. “But I was fortunate enough to take the team to see the first preseason game and he looked like a million dollars. I don’t think there’s any question he’s ready… Kenny is going to be fine when he is ready. He’ll be ready when they say ‘Kenny, it’s your turn.'”

That is a ringing endorsement from Pickett’s college head coach. Albeit, the Steelers are unlikely to make that change all that soon. They came into the season with a plan for Pickett that was truly set out in his best interests. Unless things really go south and someone falls further off a cliff, Pickett may very well start this season, but it probably will not be all that soon.

Still, Narduzzi is right that Pickett is polished and looked game ready in the preseason. He threw with anticipation and was sharp throughout the games, which is what the Steelers are sorely missing in a lot of their offensive structure as it stands. So, the switch could be made and help them, but the Steelers will stick through it until Trubisky ultimately starts to hurt them with turnovers.
