Steelers TE Coach Alfredo Roberts Tore Hamstring vs. Bengals

Steelers tight end coach Alfredo Roberts just showed that coaches can suffer injuries, too. Cam Heyward said on the Not Just Football podcast that Roberts suffered a torn hamstring against the Cincinnati Bengals in the Steelers’ first game of the 2022 NFL season.

“Most people don’t know, Fredo tore his hamstring in the Cincinnati game,” Heyward said.

The injury occurred on this Zach Gentry tight end screen. Roberts was running behind on the play and game up limp after hurting his hamstring chasing after Gentry.

Alfredo Roberts is dressed in all black and is the furthest man back among the three coaches running after the play on the sideline. He comes into view around the eight-second mark and comes up limping around the nine-second mark after chasing Gentry.

The injury, at this point, occurred nearly a month ago, so hopefully Roberts is further along in his recovery to be fine at this point. Still, Roberts is not the first coach to be injured on the sideline. Even head coaches, like former Saints head coach Sean Payton, have been injured on the sidelines during a football game.

Football is a physical game, and that can often extend to the coaching staff. Roberts will continue to coach Pat Freiermuth, Zach Gentry, and Connor Heyward as his unit throughout the season. He is in his second season at the Steelers tight end coach.
