Steelers TE Jace Sternberger

The Steelers are waiving tight end Jace Sternberger, according to a report by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Sternberger was one of five tight ends that ended up being in Steelers training camp this past year. He was a third-round draft pick out of Texas A&M in the 2019 NFL Draft with the Green Bay Packers. Sternberger’s time in Green Bay ran out in 2021, and he bounced around teams, landing with the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders before finally landing with the Steelers.

Throughout his time with the Packers, Sternberger racked up 12 receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown across three seasons. In his last season with Texas A&M, Sternberger was named a first-team All-SEC selection, and received first-team All-American honors as well.

The Steelers re-signed Sternberger to a futures contract in January. Throughout training camp, Sternberger made some wow plays, but he consistently had issues with drops and his blocking was inconsistent. That led to Sternberger’s release, but he could always potentially join the 16-man practice squad.

Sternberger is among three reported releases for the Steelers early on Monday. He joins Linden Stephens in players who have been released thus far. The Steelers have until 4 p.m. on Tuesday to cut their roster down to 53 players.
