Report: Saints to Sign former Steelers LB Sutton Smith as Fullback

The New Orleans Saints are reportedly signing former Steelers sixth-round draft pick Sutton Smith, but not as a linebacker.

Mike Triplett of ESPN reports that the Saints are set to bring in Smith as a fullback.

The Steelers toyed with the idea of using Smith on both sides of the ball as a rookie in 2019, when he worked at both outside linebacker and fullback during training camp, but the No. 175 overall pick out of Northern Illinois was waived on Aug. 31, 2019.

Smith spent one week on the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad, two weeks on the Steelers’ practice squad and two weeks on the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad in 2019. He then signed a future contract for 2020 with Seattle, but was waived on July 26, 2020 and was not signed by any other team last year.

A 6-foot, 235-pound native of Plano, Texas, Smith played two seasons of defensive end for the Salukis in 2017 and 2018, before the Steelers attempted to move him to linebacker.
