Report: Steelers Safety Sean Davis to Sign with Indianapolis Colts

Steelers free agent safety Sean Davis is signing a one-year with the Indianapolis Colts, according to a report by Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Davis, 27, was the top backup at both safety positions for the team in 2020, but was little used, with both Terrell Edmunds and Minkah Fitzpatrick staying in good health and providing solid play. He started one game (the season finale at Cleveland) and recorded 12 tackles and a pass defensed.

The Steelers originally drafted Davis in the second round out of Maryland in 2016 and he was a starter for his first three seasons, moving from strong to free safety in the process.

Davis suffered in an injury early in the 2019 season that prompted the team to acquire Fitzpatrick and left for Washington as a free agent at the end of the year. But Davis was released by Washington before the season started and returned to the Steelers on a one-year contract that paid him $910,000.

Fellow backup safety Jordan Dangerfield is also a free agent, leaving second-year player Antoine Brooks, Jr. and practice squad member John Battle as the team’s sole depth at the position at the moment. The Steelers hosted former Browns and West Virginia safety Karl Joseph for a visit on Wednesday.

Davis visited with the Colts on Thursday, according to Schefter and also met with the Buffalo Bills since becoming a free agent.
