The Pittsburgh Steelers have a difficult decision to make at quarterback this offseason. Will they re-sign Russell Wilson, Justin Fields or completely start anew?

Both quarterbacks have already been tied to the Steelers for the 2025 season. Wilson has expressed his desire to return while head coach Mike Tomlin said Fields is “certainly” in the mix as well.

NFL insider Albert Breer thinks he has the answer.

“I think they want to keep working with Justin Fields,” Breer said on “The Rich Eisen Show.” “I just don’t know if they’re going to say, ‘Yes, Justin, you can be the starter next year. So if he has an opportunity to start somewhere else, obviously, he’ll probably take that.”

Fields was more than serviceable as the Steelers starter to begin the 2024 season. He threw for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns and just one interception while leading Pittsburgh to a 4-2 start.

The 25-year-old has also proven to be a difference maker with his legs, rushing for 289 yards and five touchdowns.

Wilson, on the other hand, had a tale of two halves of the season. In his first seven games as the Steelers starter, during which he went 6-1, he threw for 1,784 yards, 12 touchdowns and three interceptions.

However, the Steelers lost five straight games, including their wild-card matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, to end the year, and his struggles played a big factor.

That’s exactly why Breer doesn’t expect the Steelers to be interested in running it back with Wilson.

“I’d be surprised,” Breer said of Wilson returning. “I think where they are right now, there’s a lot of frustration with the way Russ played towards the end of the year, and there’s some stuff there where I just don’t feel like Russell Wilson will be back there next year. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think he’ll return there next year.”

Only time will tell what the Steelers will decide to do at quarterback this offseason, but early signs tell it will be Fields if they choose to bring back one of their own.
