Schefter: Russell Wilson Thinks There’s a Chance He’s Back With Steelers

Several reports over the weekend hinted that quarterback Russell Wilson’s time with the Pittsburgh Steelers will be capped to just one year. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter doesn’t think those are all necessarily true, though.

Schefter revealed he spoke with Wilson at the Super Bowl over the weekend and he got a very different response from the 36-year-old quarterback.

“I was with Russell on Friday, and I’m just telling you, the tone I got from him was entirely different than reports that are out there,” Schefter said on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “We’ll see what winds up happening, whether or not he’s back there, but I think he feels like there’s definitely a chance he’s going to be back there. He’s having conversations with the organization about the future and where it’s going to go.”

Wilson, a pending free agent, said he had already begun contract negotiations with the Steelers following their first-round exit in the playoffs.

“Yes, we have started to talk a little bit, obviously, and we had our meetings and everything else and kind of just getting into it,” he said.

However, there may be more truth to that than many previously thought. That doesn’t mean Wilson is at the top of the Steelers’ quarterback wish list this offseason, but he may be one or two players falling through the team’s hands away from getting his wish.

“Again, there’s still a lot that’s going to play out here,” Schefter added. “But I think he definitely thinks that he may be back in Pittsburgh.”

Many believe quarterback Justin Fields is actually at the top the Steelers’ wish list, but there are several reports that hint they aren’t the only ones interested in the 25-year-old this offseason.

Only time will tell how things will play out, but Schefter warns Steelers fans to not completely shut the door on a return by Wilson in 2025.
