UNITY TWP., Pa. — There was no helicopter, no construction equipment, no fire trucks and no references to professional wrestling as the Pittsburgh Steelers moved into the summer home at St. Vincent College for training camp on Tuesday. Unlike years past, the team went with an understated approach when it came to their dorm-entry attire.

“Do you need that? We don’t need that,” defensive captain Cam Heyward said, but he added that the practice wasn’t discouraged by the team or by the senior players on it.

“I’m not a drill sergeant,” he said. “You can come in as you want. AB came in on a helicopter. Keisel came in on a fire truck or a construction truck. Deebo did it as well. You can be who you want and come up with it, but I’m not doing that. I got my car here. I need to park it. I don’t need to worry about anything else.”

Heyward’s spartan approach to his dorm entry continued on the inside, with head coach Mike Tomlin comparing his dwelling to that of a caveman.

Instead of flashy entrances, the Steelers players mostly went with an understated approach, wearing the gear of their collegiate alma mater, something Heyward said was suggested by ESPN. That resulted in Heyward wearing a classic red Ohio State sweatshirt that carried some special meaning for him on Tuesday.

“I think everyone wants to wear their college stuff,” he said. “They didn’t have to participate if they didn’t want to. But I think Ohio State speaks for itself. I hadn’t put this on since I was in the spring game when they honored Dwayne Haskins, so it meant a lot.”

Here’s more from Heyward, Tomlin and the rest of the sights and sounds as the Steelers reported to training camp.
