The Steelers are paying attention to the wide receivers in the 2023 NFL Draft as they hosted Ole Miss WR Jonathan Mingo and Purdue WR Charlie Jones for pre-draft visits according to various reports.

They are the first reported visits for wide receivers in the class. With Steven Sims heading to Houston, the Steelers will need to add someone to the slot receiver rotation. They did bring back Anthony Miller and Calvin Austin will return to help give plenty of competition at the spot. However, they still lack a bonafide starter there after trading Chase Claypool to Chicago in the season.

Regardless, both Mingo and Jones fill that potential void. Mingo is a 21-year-old player that played alongside Elijah Moore during his time in Oxford. Mingo was at the Senior Bowl but his production was never gaudy. This past season was easily his best, posting 861 yards and 5 touchdowns on 51 receptions overall. For his career, Mingo posted 1758 receiving yards, 12 touchdowns, and 15.7 yards per catch over his career on 112 receptions.

Meanwhile, Jones is a guy who was nearly a perfect slot receiver for the Boilermakers. He transferred from Iowa prior to his sixth season in college, but racked up gaudy numbers, posting 1361 yards and 12 touchdowns on 110 receptions in his lone season with Jeff Brohm’s team.

So, could the Steelers pick one of the receivers? Both are mid-round targets, so the team would not have to go grab someone early and that seems to be the range that they are looking at for adding a slot receiver. However, if the usage of the position does not improve in the coming season, they could wait even later to address it. That remains to be seen, but there are likely more names to come after Jones and Mingo that can be thrown into the ring at slot receiver.
