Steelers Kicker Chris Boswell

All 90 is a Pittsburgh Steelers Now series profiling each of the 90 members of the Steelers 2022 offseason roster.

9 • Chris Boswell, eighth-year kicker, Rice
6-foot-2, 185 pounds

Acquired: Signed by the Steelers in the middle of the 2015 season. Re-signed with the team in 2017 and 2018.

Last season: Played in all 17 games, despite a concussion scare after a botched fake attempt at Cleveland. Boswell was 18 of 18 under 40 yards, going perfect from short distance for the third straight season. Overall, he made was 36 of 40 (90%), with a long of 56.

He converted 27 of 29 (93.1%) extra points. His kickoffs went for touchbacks 46.5% of the time, down from 60.3% in 2021.

Career: Boswell has been the team’s primary kicker since joining the team mid-season in 2015.

Made the 2017 Pro Bowl after finishing the season tied for fourth in the NFL in point scored.

In 2020, Boswell set a career high by making 95% of his field goals, eclipsing the 93.5% mark he put up in 2019 and solidifying himself as the Steelers kicker after a rough season in 2018.

He set a Steelers record with a 59-yard field goal at Dallas on Nov. 8, 2020. Boswell missed three games that season, two with a hip injury and one with a groin injury and was replaced by Matthew Wright in those contests.

Before the Steelers, Boswell was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2014 by the Houston Texans and spent his rookie season on the practice. He was with the New York Giants for training camp in 2015, but was cut before the season.

College: Was a three-year starter at Rice and is second on the school’s all-time scoring list with 358 career points, two points shy of the all-time record.

Camp outlook: Wake Forest undrafted rookie Nick Sciba was brought in to be a second leg in training camp, but this will not be a real competition.

Future: Boswell is set to earn $4.95 million in the final year of his contract in 2022, and could be seeking an extension before the season.
