Steelers All 90: RB Trey Edmunds

Published

on

All 90 is a Pittsburgh Steelers Now series profiling each of the 90 members of the Steelers 2021 offseason roster.

33 • Trey Edmunds, fourth-year running back
Acquired: The Steelers signed Edmunds to their practice squad on Sept. 5, 2018. He’s been on either the team’s practice squad or active roster ever since.

Last season: Edmunds was waived coming out of training camp on Sept. 5 and signed to the practice squad the next day. He was elevated to the active roster for four games. Edmunds finished his season on injured reserve. He did not record any statistics.

Career: Edmunds started his pro career as an undrafted free agent with New Orleans in 2017, playing in all 16 games and getting nine carries for 48 yards and a touchdown.

In Pittsburgh, his most productive season was in 2019, when he rushed 22 times for 92 yards and caught six passes for 48 yards. Edmunds has become a trusted member of the Steelers’ special teams units when active and has also played fullback.

College: Edmunds spent his first three seasons at Virginia Tech before transferring to Maryland as a senior in 2016. He played in five games with the Terps before fracturing his foot.

Camp outlook: The Steelers have five running backs with NFL experience and first-round pick Najee Harris for four spots on the active roster, and it seems unlikely that Edmunds will leapfrog two players to get there.

But if the first man out of the mix ends up playing elsewhere, Edmunds could very well once again land on the practice squad as an injury call-up option,.

Future: Edmunds will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2021 season.
