Steelers All 90: WR Anthony Johnson

Published

on

All 90 is a Pittsburgh Steelers Now series profiling each of the 90 members of the Steelers 2021 offseason roster.

83 • Anthony Johnson, first-year wide receiver
6-foot-2, 220 pounds

Acquired: Signed by the Steelers as a street free agent on Jan. 8, 2020.

Last season: Johnson suffered a knee injury in training camp and the Steelers waived him with an injury settlement on Sept. 4.

After the period of his settlement had expired, the team re-signed him to the practice squad on Oct. 26 and he signed a reserve/future contract with the team for 2021 on Jna. 14.

Career: Johnson originally signed with Tampa Bay after going undrafted coming out of Buffalo in 2019. He was cut by the Buccaneers on Aug. 30, 2019.

He was then picked up by the Los Angeles Chargers and spent the test of the season on their practice squad.

College: Two-year starter at Buffalo that set a school record with 14 touchdowns as a redshirt junior in 2017. Johnson finished that season with 1,356 yards and then posted a 1,011-yard season with 11 touchdowns as a senior in 2018.

He spent his first two collegiate seasons at Iowa Western Community College.

Camp outlook: Johnson and fellow 2020 practice squad wide receiver Cody White are back, as are all five receivers from the active roster.

A move up seems unlikely, and Johnson will have to battle with a new class of rookie free agents to keep his practice squad job in 2021.

Future: Johnson will be an exclusive-rights free agent after the 2021 season.
