Steelers All 91: ILB Ulysees Gilbert III

Published

on

All 91 is a Pittsburgh Steelers Now series profiling each of the 91 members of the Steelers 2019 training camp roster.

54 • Ulysees Gilbert III, rookie inside linebacker

Last year: Started all 12 games at Sam outside linebacker for Akron, tying a school record with 51 career games played. Drafted by the Steelers in the sixth round.

Stats: Had 85 tackles, 7 1/2 for a loss, but just one-half sack after dropping four quarterbacks in each of his sophomore and junior seasons. Gilbert also had a pass defended and recovered two fumbles for two touchdowns.

Accolades, Highlights:

Was named second-team All-MAC and played in the East-West Shrine Game.

Camp outlook: The 2018-19 offseason saw big-time turnover at the inside linebacker position as the Steelers moved on from Jon Bostic and L.J. Fort and added free agent Mark Barron, first-round pick Devin Bush and Gilbert in the sixth round. He’ll have a long climb up the depth chart while he makes the transition to inside linebacker, but has experience playing in sub package defense that should help.

Projected role: Gilbert could beat out Tyler Matakevich for a spot, or could end up as the ninth linebacker if the Steelers decide to keep one.
