Steelers among Favorites to Draft First-Round Quarterback

As the 2025 NFL Draft cycle has progressed, Shedeur Sanders’ stock has taken a nosedive. It’s possible the now-former Colorado quarterback, Deion’s son, is taken early. He could also be there when the Pittsburgh Steelers choose at No. 21.
With +400 odds, BetColorado.com tabs the Steelers as the second-likeliest team to draft Sanders. The New York Giants (+200) lead the pack, while Las Vegas (+650), New Orleans (+750), and Cleveland (+800) follow.
The sportsbook isn’t alone in thinking Sanders might tumble down the order. On his podcast recently, Wave Sports + Entertainment’s Bomani Jones had a comparison for Sanders’ possible wait.
“I would not be surprised if Shedeur wound up having a Geno Smith night if he shows up on Night 1 and it goes all the way through,” Jones said. “It would not shock me. … Teams are not really going for the ‘It’s just something about him’ guys. They’re looking for big dudes with tools, right? Some exceptional or — perhaps, they’d like even more — collection of exceptional talents that you possess.
“I don’t think any of us can point to Shedeur and say, ‘What is the exceptional talent he possesses?’ What you can say is, ‘He’s got the willingness to stand in there and wait for the play to develop and he’ll, you know, be the tough guy and make that throw.”
What did Shedeur Sanders do for Colorado last season?
For the Buffaloes, Shedeur Sanders passed for 4,134 yards last season, the fourth-most in FBS. His 37 touchdown throws were second only to Miami’s Cam Ward. Sanders was also sacked more times (42) than any other passer in the country.
The Steelers might convince themselves Sanders is a viable option if he’s available when they pick. As of now, Mike Tomlin doesn’t have a passer. Pittsburgh is waiting on Aaron Rodgers to make a decision, and Justin Fields bolted for the New York Jets on Monday.
