Steelers GM Kevin Colbert, Mike Tomlin at Pitt Pro Days

PITTSBURGH — Steelers team president Art Rooney II, head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Kevin Colbert were all at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex to watch Monday’s Pitt pro day.

The Steelers share the facility with Pitt, so Rooney, Tomlin, and Colbert made the quick trip to see what was happening on the other side of the facility. While Tomlin and Colbert often send another representative to Pitt pro day, this year takes precedence given the need for a quarterback.

Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett worked out Monday, including live throwing drills. With the Steelers’ need for a quarterback, it is possible that the pair are looking at Pitt’s star quarterback. Pickett has stated he has met with the Steelers multiple times, including at the Senior Bowl and the 2022 NFL Combine.

Colbert and Tomlin have the advantage of knowing the Panthers’ players better than most around the NFL. Given they share the facility, they likely hear a lot about the prospects and can watch them as well. Still, getting a closer look and chat with Pickett is never something that a team vetting for their next franchise quarterback can turn down.

Also in attendance for the Steelers was pro scouting coordinator Brandon Hunt, vice president Omar Khan, college scouting director Phil Kriedler, player personnel coordinator Dan Rooney Jr, scouting intern Fawwaz Izzuddin, offensive coordinator Matt Canada, defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, senior defensive assistant Brian Flores, inside linebackers coach Jerry Olsavsky, assistant outside linebackers coach Denzel Martin, and conditioning coordinator Garrett Giemont.

Austin ran the cornerback drills for cornerback Damarri Mathis. Mathis had an impressive testing day and multiple defensive back coaches came to Pitt to check out Mathis. Meanwhile. Martin ran the drills for the three Pitt linebackers in Johnny Petrishen, Chase Pine, and Phil Campbell. Izzuddin ran the testing drills at large.

Other notable prospects working out at the Panthers’ pro day are long snapper Cal Adomitis, tight end Lucas Krull, wide receiver, Taysir Mack, wide receiver Melquise Stovall, and defensive lineman Keyshon Camp.
