Steelers Break 4-Year-Old Offensive Mark

PITTSBURGH — For the first time in over four years, the Pittsburgh Steelers have scored more than 30 points in consecutive contests.

The last instance in which the Steelers stocked the scoreboard with as many points in back-to-back weeks was in October 2020. Pittsburgh put up 38 in both of those games, wins against Philadelphia and Cleveland en route to an 11-0 start.

The Steelers scored at least 30 points in successive wins last year — a 34-11 decision against Cincinnati and a 30-23 count at Seattle — as they made their late push to the postseason with Mason Rudolph operating the offense.

With 26 seconds to play against the New York Jets on Sunday night, Najee Harris rumbled in from 10 yards out to cap Pittsburgh’s 37-15 win. It was also the exclamation point on 31 unanswered points for the Steelers.

Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Van Jefferson made it 30-15 2:51 into the final frame. It was Wilson’s second touchdown pass of the night, with the other being a 11-yard connection with George Pickens shortly before the midway point.

Pittsburgh scored 32 in a road win over the Las Vegas Raiders last Sunday. Despite that output, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin chose to make a switch behind center, inserting Wilson as starter against the Jets rather than Justin Fields.

Fields had gone 4-2 as Pittsburgh’s starter as Wilson awaited his return with an ailing calf. Wilson also burrowed in for a 1-yard sneak set up by undrafted rookie defensive back Beanie Bishop’s second interception of the night.

Almost-automatic Steelers kicker Chris Boswell added field goals of 46, 29, and 21 yards. Boswell is 16 of 17 on field goals tries this season, with his lone miss coming on a 62-yard try against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3.
