Steelers Daily: Watson to Play for Browns; Roquan Smith Trade?

Deshaun Watson

🏈: Steelers Training Camp Takeaways (+): Kenny Pickett flashed, George Pickens dominated as the 2-minute drill rescued an otherwise tough day for the offense.

🏈: Should the Steelers pursue Bears linebacker Roquan Smith?

🏈: Steelers Injury Updates: Benny Snell suffers knee injury as latest banged up back; Chase Claypool setback?

🏈: SN Debate: Which QB should start the Steelers preseason opener, Mitch Trubisky or Kenny Pickett? Alan Saunders and Cale Berger took sides.

🏈 The Steelers claimed outside linebacker Hamilcar Rashed on waivers from the Jets and waived injured inside linebacker Ulysees Gilbert III.

🏈After ranking 21st in points per game (20.2) last season, Chase Claypool thinks there’s no ceiling for the Steelers’ offense in 2022.

“I think we can be the best offense in the country as long as we do all the right things,” Claypool told former Steelers cornerback Bryant McFadden, who was at Saint Vincent College on Tuesday for CBS Sports. “We got to stay healthy, and we got to execute plays. But I think there is no ceiling for us, and I know a lot of people are going to get on my head for that, but I believe that, and as I should.”

🏈Steelers’ second-round pick George Pickens has been getting a lot of headlines for his exceptional play at training camp, but Mike Tomlin isn’t surprised by what he’s seen from the Georgia product.

“I don’t know that anything surprises me, to be honest with you,” Tomlin told McFadden. “I was able to go to Athens and see his pro day, and sometimes that’s all you need from an evaluation standpoint. You get in person and you see things at ground level at real speed. I don’t think he’s doing anything here that myself and the coaching staff that went to Athens, Georgia didn’t see at his pro day. He’s just a really talented guy.”

Tomlin also told McFadden that if the season started today, Mitch Trubisky would be QB1. “Mitch has won in this league, the statistics bear that out, and he has more experience than the others.”

🏈 Despite facing a six-game suspension or possibly the entire season, the Cleveland Browns announced that Deshaun Watson is expected to start at quarterback against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday night in their first preseason game.

🏈 Tests confirmed that Browns’ wide receiver/kick returner Jakeem Grant suffered a torn Achilles and is out for the season. The injury occurred during 1-on-1 drills at Tuesday’s practice.
