Steelers Daily Links: Players, Owners Oppose TNF Flex; Highsmith Gives Back
🏈 J.J. Watt called out the NFL for its hypocrisy on player safety and lack of consideration for fans. “Flexing games from Sunday to Thursday is a terrible idea for two main reasons: 1) Player Safety. You can’t make this decision and also preach that player safety is a priority. 2) Fans. People spending hard earned money to see their team play. Who’s paying to change their plans?” The Thursday Night Football flex scheduling proposal was tabled until May, while the owners approved a change that will allow a team to play two TNF games in a season.
🏈 New York Giants owner John Mara is “adamantly opposed” to the TNF flex scheduling proposal. Mara called the proposal “abusive” to season ticket holders. “At some point, can we please give some consideration to the people who are coming to the games?” Mara said.
🏈 Warren Sharp: The Steelers haven’t won a playoff game in six years. Only nine teams in the league have longer droughts without a playoff win.
🏈 North Carolina wide receiver Josh Downs said that after his pro day workout, the Steelers told him it was one of the “cleanest” workouts they’ve seen. Downs is currently projected to come off the board within the top-50 picks in the draft.
🏈 Alex Highsmith returned to his alma mater Charlotte to speak with the football team.
🏈 Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam defended Deshaun Watson’s $250 million fully guaranteed contract. “We did what we thought was in the best interest of our team. We still feel that way,” Haslam said at the owners meetings.
🏈 Columbia Spectator: Mike Tomlin’s son, Mason, will take the stage before Bakar, BKTHERULA, and Doechii at this year’s Bacchanal on Saturday after winning Battle of the Bands in February. Along with being a rapper and music producer, Mason is a cornerback at Columbia. Mason told the Columbia Spectator that he comes from a family of “strictly” athletes, but his great-grandfather, “the closest musician in [his] family,” played piano for Billie Holiday and won a Grammy.
🏈 Kenny Pickett continues to train in South Florida with his personal quarterbacks coach Tony Racioppi. “Pittsburgh Steelers QB Kenny Pickett working Gun 3 and Reset playing Hi/Lo throwing 10yd Speed Out to Saints TE Lucas Kroll with accuracy, velocity and layer with shoulder tilt. Been a greatest 7 weeks of work with KP as usual!” Racioppi tweeted.
