Steelers Daily Links: Tomlin Owns MNF; Praise for Pickett Piling Up

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin owns Monday Night Football and plenty of people are praising the performance of rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett.

🏈 With the win over the Indianapolis Colts, Mike Tomlin is now 19-3 on Monday Night Football in his career as the Steelers head coach. Tomlin has the second-highest win percentage of any coach on MNF, trailing only the legendary John Madden. Don’t expect Tomlin to wax poetic on that placement.

🏈 Adam Schein of CBS Sports thinks Kenny Pickett and George Pickens are going to be the next great QB-WR duo in the NFL. “Get ready to see Kenny Pickett to George Pickens in Pittsburgh for a LONG time,” Schein said.

🏈 According to 538, the Steelers chances of making the playoffs tripled after beating Indy. All the way to 3% from 1% last week.

🏈 Jeff Saturday regretted not calling a timeout late in the Steelers-Colts game. “I wish I had that third down back. I wish I had called a timeout,” Saturday told the Indianapolis media on Tuesday.

🏈 Due to the clock mismanagement blunder by Saturday, Steelers outside linebacker Alex Highsmith was able to break through and tackle running back Jonathan Taylor for no gain on third-and-3. With the Colts hurrying up to the line of scrimmage after a Matt Ryan scramble, tight end Jelani Woods’ stance indicated to Highsmith that it was going to be a run.

🏈 Alex Highsmith leads the league in strip sacks with four. In addition, Highsmith’s 10 sacks rank fifth-best in the NFL through 12 weeks. The Charlotte product has certainly played at a Pro Bowl level in 2022.

🏈 NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger loves what he’s seen from Highsmith in Year 3. “Alex Highsmith has really emerged in 2022 as a consistent force in all phases of the game. Nothing better or more fun to chart in this industry than player development,” Baldinger said.

🏈 Former Cleveland Brown and future Hall of Fame left tackle Joe Thomas thinks the Steelers have something special in Kenny Pickett. “If I’m a Steelers fan, I’m waking up with an ear to ear grin this morning. Not because you won the game last night, that was meaningless. No, it’s because Kenny Pickett looks like the real deal,” Thomas said on Twitter.

🏈 Former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky also gave high praise to Kenny Pickett for his 13-yard completion to George Pickens on third-and-9, which ended up being the game-winning drive. “You’ve gotta be so encouraged if you’re the Steelers. Big-time Ball KP,” Orlovsky tweeted.

🏈 Kenny Pickett is among only three quarterbacks who have started each of the last three weeks and have zero turnovers. Jimmy Garoppolo of San Francisco and Jared Goff of Detroit are the two other quarterbacks.

🏈 Ben Roethlisberger had Maurkice Pouncey on his latest Footbahlin podcast. Roethlisberger and Pouncey were watching the Steelers-Colts game on MNF during the episode. Roethlisberger was at a pastors retreat in Orlando, so that’s how he met up with Pouncey down in Florida.

🏈 The Steelers have the fourth-most rushing yards (491) in the NFL over the last three weeks. Najee Harris, Benny Snell, Jaylen Warren, and Anthony McFarland are all averaging over four yards per carry in that span.

🏈 George Pickens did Cristiano Ronaldo’s Siuuu celebration following his two-point conversion grab on Monday night. With the World Cup currently going on, it was definitely fitting for Pickens to pay homage to the soccer legend.
