INDIANAPOLIS — Pittsburgh Steelers right guard James Daniels went down with an ankle injury on the offenses’ first possession of Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. Daniels was downgraded to out for the rest of the game.

Daniels walked off the field slowly under his own power and went into the blue medical tent. Daniels was then carted off the field.

Second-year offensive lineman Spencer Anderson replaced Daniels at right guard. On the play that Daniels’ got injured, Justin Fields completed a 17-yard pass to Calvin Austin III to move the chains on third-and-9. The Steelers’ possession ultimately stalled after an unnecessary roughness penalty on Anderson. Anderson hit a defender in the back after the play.

The Steelers are with two young guards now, as rookie Mason McCormick is starting in place of injured guard Isaac Seumalo, who missed his fourth game with a preseason pectoral injury. Anderson started the first three games that Seumalo missed, but last week against the Los Angeles Chargers, McCormick got his first NFL playing time.

The fourth-round rookie out of South Dakota State rotated in for 25 snaps of offense, playing 12 in place of Anderson at left guard and also working as the team’s sixth offensive lineman. This week, McCormick got the nod to start. Anderson was expected to rotate in with McCormick.

“I’m super excited,” he said on Friday. “Any opportunity you get to play this game, it’s a fun one. I look forward to the challenge and whatever happens, happens.”

With Dylan Cook and Troy Fautanu both on the injured reserve list, Anderson is also the team’s top backup at the tackle position. Center/guard Ryan McCollum and offensive tackle Calvin Anderson are the two other active offensive lineman.

The Steelers have already had two rookies start game this season: Fautanu at right tackle and Zach Frazier at center. Undrafted rookie Beanie Bishop has not started a game, but is the team’s top Nickel cornerback.
