Steelers Injury Update: TE Pat Freiermuth Remains in Concussion Protocol, ‘Answers Are in House’ if Unavailable

Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol and his availability for this Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs is unknown.

With co-starter Eric Ebron on injured reserve and third-stringer Kevin Rader also banged up, that leaves the Steelers with a pretty thin tight end room this week, with just Zach Gentry fully healthy from the 53-man roster.

Tomlin acknowledged that Freiermuth will have a chance to return without missing playing time after taking a high, hard hit from Tennessee Titans defensive back Kristian Fulton on Sunday.

“We’ll let the protocol be our guide as he works back to practice and then the quality of that practice participation coupled with the evaluations that come from our medical experts will be our guide,” Tomlin said.

The Steelers do have one player they can recall from the practice squad in former Packers tight end Jace Sternberger. Backup tackles Zach Banner and Joe Haeg have both played tight end extensively in the past. Tomlin said the team will not look to make an external addition.

“Our answers are in house if [Freiermuth] is unavailable,” Tomlin said.
