PITTSBURGH โ€” Quarterback Justin Fields will be dressed only as an emergency backup for the Pittsburgh Steelers in their Week 8 home game against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.

Fields was a late addition to the Steelersโ€™ injury report on Sunday, when he was listed as questionable to play with a hamstring injury. Itโ€™s unclear how Fieldsโ€™ injury happened. He took warmups at Acrisure Stadium on Monday night just before the official announcement.

Russell Wilson will make his second consecutive start, while veteran backup Kyle Allen will serve as the No. 2. Fields is technically inactive and can only play in game if both Wilson and Allen are injured or ejected.

Wilson had served as the No. 3 quarterback while he was sidelined for the first six games of the season. Allen was the emergency backup last week against the New York Jets.

Allen made one appearance while Wilson was out, playing two snaps while Fields was checked for a concussion in the teamโ€™s Week 5 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The Steelers do not have a fourth quarterback, either on their active roster or on their practice squad.

In six games as the Steelersโ€™ starter, Fields completed 106 of 160 passes (66.3%) for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, one interception and a 93.9 passer rating. He also rushed 55 times for 231 yards and five scores. He is tied for seventh in the NFL in rushing touchdowns and is first among non-running backs.
