Steelers Land ‘Wild-Card’ Quarterback in Latest Mock Draft
The Pittsburgh Steelers are projected to draft Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Pittsburgh Steelers still only have one quarterback under contract for the 2025 season — Skylar Thompson. That’s why Dane Brugler of The Athletic believes they may just get lucky enough to land one of the top quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft.
In his latest mock draft, Brugler has Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders falling to the Steelers at pick No. 21.
“Sanders is going to be a wild card in this draft. He could go in the top six or fall out of the first round entirely — neither outcome would be a shock,” Brugler writes. “He is not a first-round quarterback for a lot of teams, which isn’t a major surprise (and matches my evaluation). But all it takes is one front office to roll the dice on his skill set. If Sanders falls out of the top 10, this would be an interesting landing spot. The Steelers are searching for answers at the QB position.”
Sanders falling outside the top 10 picks, nonetheless the top 20 picks, would be quite the surprise. Many view him as a top-5 pick and one of the top two quarterbacks in the draft, along with Miami’s Cam Ward.
The 23-year-old threw for 7,364 yards, 64 touchdowns and 13 interceptions over the past two years at Colorado and has NFL bloodlines as the son of Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders.

However, a recent report by NFL insider Josina Anderson said “a team drafting in the top seven” referred to Sanders as coming off “brash” and “arrogant” in his team interview. If other teams feel similarly about Sanders, he may just fall as Brugler predicts.
It remains to be seen whether the Steelers would be the ones to stop his fall, but it will become even more likely if they are unable to land a quarterback within the next week or so.
Quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are both set to become free agents and have somewhat of a market.
The Steelers hope they can re-sign Fields, but if that doesn’t happen, Sanders to Pittsburgh could heat up even more.
