Steelers OLB Alex Highsmith Injury Return Still Up in the Air

The Pittsburgh Steelers are still waiting to see if outside linebacker Alex Highsmith will be able to return from his ankle injury this week.

PITTSBURGH — Outside linebacker Alex Highsmith is pushing for a return this week for the Pittsburgh Steelers Week 13 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, but did not practice with the team on Tuesday, and his status remains up in the air.

“Progressing every day, that’s my goal,” Highsmith said on Tuesday. “It is an AFC North battle, I am aiming to try to get back out there. I got to be confident that I can play on it.”

Highsmith has yet to return to practice, but said he plans to do so this week. Whether or not he plays against the Bengals will likely depend on how he responds to that practice work.

“From a health standpoint, we’ve got Alex Highsmith leaning in on the return,” Tomlin said. “We’ll let his participation and the quality of that participation be our guide in terms of whether he gets back in or to what degree he gets back in.”

The Steelers outside linebacker has been out since suffering a left low ankle sprain in the fourth quarter of the team’s Week 10 win over the Washington Commanders.

Highsmith told Steelers Now that he doesn’t think the game being played on a turf surface in Cincinnati will have an impact on whether or not he’s able to play. The Steelers play and almost always practice on more-forgiving grass surfaces.

Elsewhere, the Steelers did get other good injury news as starting inside linebackers Elandon Roberts (undisclosed) and Patrick Queen (foot) were back in action after missing time against the Cleveland Browns with in-game ailments. Wide receiver Van Jefferson (quad) also got right back to work.

Cornerback Cory Trice Jr. (hamstring) continues to practice on his 21-day window. The Steelers do not have to make a decision about whether or not to active him until after the game against the Bengals.
