Steelers Practice Report: Full Justin Fields Experience, OL Issues
Pittsburgh Steelers Practice Report: George Pickens speaks for the first time this training camp, reaction to the club’s Hall of Honor class.
UNITY TWP., Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers had their fourth training camp practice of 2024 on Sunday at St. Vincent College, and Alan Saunders and Zachary Smith of Steelers Now were there to break it all down. For the fourth straight day, starting quarterback Russell Wilson did not participate in practice, with Justin Fields leading the first-team offense. Wilson has been inching back to full strength, and appears set to return to action on Tuesday.
Fields put on the full experience of his career on Sunday. He led the offense to a 6-1 victory in seven shots, with the first team scoring on three of four reps. Then on the second play of the second team period, he threw up a pass right to Steelers cornerback Donte Jackson. Fields has gotten a lot of reps the first week of training camp, but has done little to suggest he’s closer to securing the team’s starting job.
The Steelers’ offensive line has had a tough time preventing false starts in the early going. With a new offensive scheme full of different shifts and motions, some of that is to be expected, but by the end of the first week, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has taken to having his linemen run a lap every time they make a pre-snap error. Troy Fautanu got his most extensive work at right tackle on Sunday, replacing Broderick Jones for a bit after he banged his elbow on the first play of practice. Jones is fine, but it provided an on-ramp for some extended work for the first-round pick.
On defense, linebacker Payton Wilson tipped one pass and forced a fumble, as he took most of Elandon Roberts’ usual reps while the vet got most of day off. All that and more in today’s Pittsburgh Steelers Practice Report.
