Steelers Promote Denzel Martin to OLB Coach

Steelers Denzel Martin

The Pittsburgh Steelers have promoted Denzel Martin to outside linebackers coach and made officially the hiring of Jason Brooks from the Baltimore Ravens, then team announced on Monday.

Martin has been with the Steelers since 2016, working as a coaching assistant on the defense. In 2020, he became assistant outside linebackers coach, working under defensive coordinator Keith Butler in that capacity.

In 2022 after Butler retired, Jerry Olsavsky and Martin worked with the outside linebackers. Olsavsky was not retained by the team this offseason. Martin will continue to work closely with defensive line coach Karl Dunbar.

During the 2023 Senior Bowl, he got to work as a full position coach for the first time in his career. A St. Louis native, Martin was a linebacker at the University of Missouri from 2010-14 and got his coaching career started at his alma mater in 2015.

Brooks will be the Steelers defensive quality control coach, a position that has not been filled on the coaching staff for several years. Matt Tomsho has been the team’s offensive quality control coach since 2020. The last time the Steelers had a defensive quality control coach was Lou Spanos in 2009.

Quality control coaches are primarily responsible for self-scouting, performing both evaluations on the play of the team and also identifying team tendencies and weaknesses that opponents might pick up on. They also frequently accumulate many other duties.

Brooks has worked with the Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, FIU, Charleston Southern, Colby College and his alma mater, Middle Tennessee State. He was most recently the assistant defensive line coach in Baltimore.
