Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger Steps Up as Leader For Offensive Rookies

The Steelers kicked off rookie minicamp, and as the new rookies settle into the Steelers culture, they are receiving help from arguably the most important player on the Steelers. Ben Roethlisberger has already started to establish a relationship with all four rookies that he is hoping will help elevate the Steelers’ offense to the next level.

For Freiermuth, his communication with Roethlisberger came shortly after his name was called during the NFL Draft.

“He (Roethlisberger) called me the day after I got drafted,” Freiermuth said. “He’s an awesome guy.”

Freiermuth also mentioned that Roethlisberger is planning to take Najee Harris, Kendrick Green, Dan Moore, and himself out to dinner Saturday night.

“He’s going to take Najee, Kendrick, Dan, and I out to dinner tomorrow night,” Freiermuth said. “He’s texted back and forth a couple of times with us. ”

For Freiermuth, however, there is a bit more of a personal feel. The Steelers just so happened to put his locker right next to Roethlisberger’s for the upcoming season.

“My locker is actually next to him,” Freiermuth said. “It’s pretty cool just seeing him. When I was a young kid, I was like “yeah, that’s Ben Roethlisberger”, now, my locker’s right next to him so it’s pretty cool and definitely surreal.”

Roethlisberger is the veteran and leader of this group. The Steelers went all in trying help him win this season, and Roethlisberger seems to be showing leadership to try and maximize the narrow window that is left.
