Steelers Radio Broadcaster Bill Hillgrove Charged with DUI

Longtime Pitt and Pittsburgh Steelers radio announcer and former WTAE sportscaster Bill Hillgrove has been charged with driving under the influence.

Hillgrove, 80, was charged on Friday with driving under the influence after crashing into Ferri’s ShurSave supermarket on Old William Penn Highway on Monday. The crash broke two windows in the building.

The Tribune-Review reported that a store manager told police that despite the crash, Hillgrove still went inside the store to fill a prescription. He then got back in his damaged Honda CR-V and drove away. Police responded to a call about the incident and eventually found Hillgrove at his home not far from the store.

Hillgrove was charged with having a blood-alcohol content of over .16, which is double the legal limit. A preliminary hearing is scheduled to be held in front of Murrysville magistrate Charles Conway on Aug. 11.

Hillgrove started working at the University of Pittsburgh in 1969 and joined Steelers Radio Network in 1994. He also served as sports director at WTAE-TV, starting in 1978.

Neither Pitt nor the Steelers have released a statement on the matter.
