Steelers Re-Sign Veteran Wide Receiver

Miles Boykin will remain in the Steel City, as the Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Monday afternoon that they’ve re-signed the veteran wide receiver to a one-year deal. Financial terms have not yet been disclosed.

After an injury-riddled 2021 season, Boykin was out of favor with the Ravens heading into his third year and was released on April 18, 2022. The Steelers claimed him off waivers a day later. In 2022 with the Steelers, Boykin played in 16 games (starting one) and saw action predominately on special teams. Boykin finished the year with two catches for 11 yards and 10 tackles.

Boykin, a Notre Dame product, was a third-round pick by the Ravens in the 2020 NFL Draft. He caught 33 passes for 470 yards and seven touchdowns in three years with Baltimore. In 2021, he was hampered by a hamstring injury, spending time on the reserve/injured list and played in just eight games, mainly on special teams. He had only one catch for six yards.

Standing at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, Boykin is a big-bodied receiver who’s known for his blocking. He was also considered by many to be the Steelers’ top gunner on punt coverage last year.

Boykin, 26, will return to a Steelers’ wide receivers room that includes Diontae Johnson, George Pickens, Allen Robinson II and Calvin Austin III, Gunner Olszewski and Anthony Miller.

Boykin has had minimal success as a receiver in the NFL. His career-high single-season numbers were in 2020 with the Ravens, catching 19 passes for 266 yards (14.0 average) and four touchdowns. In regards to single-game numbers, the most receptions that he’s recorded are four, and his most receiving yards are 55.

Special teams is where Boykin will have to succeed to make the roster. The Big 4 at wide receiver are Johnson, Pickens, Robinson and Allen. Boykin will have to beat out Olszewski and Miller. The Steelers usually carry only five receivers on their active roster.
