Steelers Send Flores, Olsavsky, Brown to Watch Prospects at Penn State Pro Day

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The Steelers sent plenty of personnel, including senior defensive assistant Brian Flores, inside linebackers coach Jerry Olsavsky, and secondary coach Grady Brown, to State College for Penn State’s annual pro day on Thursday.

Pittsburgh was on hand to see a number of defensive prospects. Olsavsky and Flores seemed to pay particularly close attention to Penn State inside linebacker Brandon Smith. Smith, an athletic linebacker, has plenty of traits to like. Olsavsky ran Smith through his drills on Thursday, thus taking a hands-on approach with the Nittany Lions linebacker.

Flores and Olsavsky both had extended conversations with Smith over the course of the day. In addition, they had plenty of conversations with standout safety and Pittsburgh native Jaquan Brisker. Brown, in particular, watched Brisker’s workout and testing closely. They seemed to be taking an extreme interest in both Smith and Brisker on the day.

Other standout players to watch defensively were cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields, edge rusher Arnold Ebiketie, and outside linebacker Jesse Luketa. Offensively the Steelers had their eye on wide receiver Jahan Dotson and offensive tackle Rasheed Walker.

Still, it seemed Pittsburgh took an extreme interest in Smith and Brisker, which is something to file away as the Steelers look to draft players heading into day two of the NFL Draft. Area scout Dave Petett was also in attendance.
