The Pittsburgh Steelers are continuing to seek a pass-catcher for their offense after trading away George Pickens. After it was reported on Thursday that the Pittsburgh Steelers are interested in Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith, Steelers Now was able to confirm the Steelers’ interest in another wide receiver: Trey Palmer of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Steelers are in need at the wide receiver position after trading away George Pickens. Tampa Bay retained Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and also drafted Emeka Egbuka in the first-round. They also drafted Jalen McMillan in the 2024 draft.

The former LSU Tiger and Nebraska Cornhusker is likely facing an uphill battle not just for play time, but also to make the final roster. A new start somewhere like a receiver-needy Pittsburgh could fit the bill.

The Steelers are hoping their former third-round pick Roman Wilson will take a step in the right direction this season. Outside of Wilson, recently acquired D.K. Metcalf, and Calvin Austin III, the future of the room is unclear in 2025.

Pittsburgh did sign Robert Woods this offseason, but his signing feels more like an Allen Robinson-type acquisition. Palmer’s speed and youth would at minimum allow him to climb the depth chart.

Palmer played college football at LSU. For his senior season, he transferred to Nebraska and put himself on the NFL Draft map. He recorded over 70 receptions north of 1,000 yards with nine touchdowns.

Palmer also ran a blazing 4.33 40-yard dash at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine. He also combined for 45 special teams returns with two touchdowns over his collegiate career.
