The Pittsburgh Steelers and running back Kaleb Johnson have officially agreed to terms on a rookie contract.

The Steelers selected Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson with the 83rd overall pick in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The selection filled a much-needed hole at running back after last year’s leading rusher, Najee Harris, signed with the Chargers in free agency.

Johnson is expected to be an immediate contributor for the Steelers on the offensive side of the ball.

As a prospect, Johnson displays a variety of traits that suggest long-term potential. In 2024, he averaged 6.4 yards per carry and totaled over 1,500 rushing yards. His powerful frame helped him rank fourth in the nation in average yards after contact (4.42). He pairs that strength with explosive burst and acceleration, allowing him to consistently reach the second level and outrun defensive backs.

Johnson will likely assume the early-down workload, while Jaylen Warren serves as the change-of-pace back and third-down option—particularly in pass protection, one of the few areas where Johnson needs improvement. Warren may see more touches early in the season due to his experience, but Johnson is still expected to receive significant volume, especially in Arthur Smith’s offense, which favors bigger, downhill runners. That shouldn’t be an issue for Johnson, who averaged 20 carries per game last season.

With continued uncertainty at quarterback and the recent trade of wide receiver George Pickens to the Cowboys, the Steelers are expected to lean heavily on the run game in 2025. This pick should help improve the overall efficiency and consistency of that ground attack.

Specific details of Johnson’s contract have not been disclosed, but according to OverTheCap.com, the deal is projected to be worth $6.3 million over four years, including a $1.3 million signing bonus.

Johnson is six of seven rookies the Steelers have signed so far.
